5K Race This Weekend & Day Care Nutrition

I'm gearing up for a 5K race this weekend which I will be running with my sister-in-law. The hubby and brother-in-law are doing a 1/2 marathon but someone has to watch Sam so I'm pushing her in the BOB for 3.1. Call me lazy but I'm not going to sign up for 13.1 pushing a jogging stroller. This week has been a pretty light training week. Travis & I were both sick on Tuesday and I've been taking it pretty easy since then.

Last weekend we headed to my in-laws and we got in a run together while Papa & Grandma watched Sam. It's always great to go on a run with my hubby! We also took some really cute pictures of Sam.

Now for the second subject in my title line. I read the post by misszippy about unhealthy America and it brought to light a struggle that I am having right now. Sam will be 11 months old next week and is pretty much ready to give up baby food. So yesterday I asked for a menu from day care of the table food they feed the kids and it is horrible. Here is a week of afternoon snacks just to give you a picture:

Monday: Banana Bread & Milk

Tuesday: Chips & Salsa with Water - infants & tods get Cookies & Milk

Wednesday: Vanilla Wafers & Juice

Thursday: Dill Pickles & Saltines (seriously - could you get any more sodium squeezed in. This is after a lunch of sausage links, hashbrown casserole, pears & milk) - infants & tods get Animal Crackers & Juice

Friday: Goldfish & Raisins with Water - infants & tods get juice instead of raisins

I don't really want her eating most of this crap. Where are the fruits (I haven't given her juice and I don't want to start), veggies & lean protein?????

Can I have her bring her own lunch and will they feed it to her? Will they think I am crazy - probably - but do I care.

HELP!!!!

  1. i don't really give my kids juice either. I say do what you think is best for her, and you're not crazy;-)

  2. We used to take our kids lunch but it started to become a problem: they were upset that they were not eating what the other kids were eating. However, I have them both convinced that hot dogs and ICKY. I say try it and go with it as long as Sam is happy.

  3. i use an in home day care and send breakfast (multigrain hot cereal with applesauce and berries) and a snack (cut up fruit or cheese), but gave in on lunch because i just ran out of ideas to pack (plus she cooks so i think it's fairly healthy...but i don't ask). i'd think this young she wouldn't notice that she's eating anything different, and yeah, i'd send her with food AND try to convince them to healthy-up their offerings (at least cut out the juice - seriously, what is wrong with water??).

  4. ABSOLUTELY bring your own food. I'm a dietitian, so I guess that automatically makes me crazy when it comes to what I eat and what I feed my family (even the dog). Those food options you listed are pretty terrible, and this is one reason we have children growing up to favor sweets and stick their tongues out at fruits and vegetables. True, you don't want to always give Sam your own healthy packed foods and make her feel singled out, so maybe let her have the day care snack once a week. Here's another approach: if you feed her as healthy as possible in the home, having a not-so-nutritious snack at day care won't hurt her. As kids get older, you have to do the best you can inside your home with healthy foods.... once they step out the door to school and birthday parties, it's really hard to control what they eat and you don't want to be too strict. If you lay a good foundation in the home, that's the best thing you can do. Oh boy, I could go on and on about this -- you've inspired me to blog on the topic!!
